Bodies of all shapes and sizes are beautiful. The idea of the ‘perfect body’ is unattainable and often not sustainable for many men and women. Social media and our cultures have created how beauty is defined and seen in our everyday settings.
Talking about ‘weight’ or ‘obesity’ may bring up many negative emotions for you.
Canadians living with obesity are faced with weight-based discrimination and weight bias daily. This may lead to feelings of shame, blaming oneself, anxiety, depression, poor self-esteem, and body dissatisfaction. This may contribute to excessive dieting, yo-yo diets, weight cycling up and down, and a sense that food is controlling you instead of you controlling your ‘food’.
Please note that at Hormones and Health we are interested in meeting YOU where you are at. We work with our clients to create your own obesity management pathway.
Obesity is a MEDICAL condition that can be caused by multiple factors.
Obesity is shown to have negative consequences on one’s health which increases over time.
Obesity, like any other chronic disease does NOT define who you are as a person.
Being overweight does not mean that you are lazy, have no self-control, have given up, or that you just don’t care enough!
Obesity does not mean that you are valued less compared to a non-obese person.
However, our physical surroundings may contribute to feeling that way as the chairs are undersized, medical equipment is not the correct size, and aisles or doorways are too small to be able to move comfortably.
Weight discrimination can affect your access to education, employment, and medical care, causing health and social inequities.
